County Scene
In 2007 both Danny Shevill and James Curry represented the county with Danny also playing in the Junior County Team.
The club hightlight of 2007 was James Curry and Neil Graham winning the County Foursomes and Inter County Foursomes. They defeated Arcot Hall (2 up) in county final and Houghton le Spring (at the 19th) in the inter-county final.
The ladies enjoyed double success in the Northumberland Ladies County Golf Association Spring Meeting. Our Ladies won the team event and Cath Jenkins was 2nd in her category.
Our junior team of Luke Anderson, Jack Hill, Andrew Scrimshaw and Graeme Younger won the gross and nett prizes at the NJGL Team Championship.
Individually Danny Shevill won the County Junior Strokeplay Championships, the Northern Counties Junior Strokeplay Championships and the Junior County Autumn Championship.
Andrew Scrimshaw was selected to play in the England under 18 schools' international match against Welsh schools.
James Curry and Danny Shevill both started golf scholarship studies in America. Good Luck to both of them!
The 2008 season has got off to a cracking start with a trans-America success. Danny Shevill has won his first event in America returning a 2 under par 70 in the Ronnie Black Collegiate Invitation at Lovington, New Mexico. The event was reduced from 36 to 18 holes because of snow.
In the Mail on Sunday Classic we progressed to round 3 with victories against Westerhope (3-2) and Hydro (4-1) but defeat against Cleveland (3-2). Our star man was Malcolm Ward who won all his 3 matches.
Defending the County Foursomes title proved too much for Neil Graham and Kevin Robson. They got off to a winning start defeating Magdalene Fields 3&2 in round 1 and Ponteland 3&2 in round 2 but lost 2&1 to Bellingham in the quarter finals.
In the North & South event held at Burgham Park on 3rd May our entries included, Andrew Scrimshaw (145), Shaun Philipson (149), Kevin Robson (153), Paul Armstrong (155), Thomas Rowland (170) and Denny Ward (NR). The winner was Shaun Head (135) from Hexham.
In the NJGA Matchplay Championships held at Prudhoe in May, Andrew Scrimshaw and Luke Anderson both qualified for the matchplay knockout phase, a great achievement considering 90 entried this major county event. Luke made it to the quarter final stage and Andrew the semi final.The eventual winner was Nicky Maddison from the City of Newcastle.
In the Stroke-play Championship event held at Ponteland on 24th & 25th May our entries included, Andrew Scrimshaw (155), Luke Anderson (159) Shaun Philipson (148), Kevin Robson (151), Paul Armstrong (159), David Craig (NR) and Denny Ward (NR). Shaun and Kevin qualified for the final 36 holes and finished with total scores of 302 and 304 repectively. The winner was M Penny (Morpeth) with a score of 288.
The junior strokeplay championship held at Bellingham on Thursday 29th May and Andrew Scrimshaw won the under 16 age category with rounds of 76 & 75.
No luck in the Fenwick-Smith event held at Bambrough on 7th June. Our entries included Andrew Scrimshaw (142), Denny Ward (144), James Curry (145), Paul Armstrong (147), Kevin Robson (148) and Danny Shevill (152). The winner was Nicky Maddison (134) from City of Newcastle.
The County Seniors Chamionship was held on 11th & 12th June at Prudhoe. Ten members entered and 3 qualified for the 2nd day - Malcolm Ward, Alan Dunn & John Turnbull. Congratulations to all with a special mention to Malcolm Ward who won the Tim Bull Cup with the best nett score (75-6 = 69) and Alan Dunn who was 3rd in the gross category with rounds of 76 & 79. The winner was W Blackie with 2 rounds of 74. Incidently Malcolm would have been 2nd in the gross category with rounds of 75 & 78 but by winning the nett prize he was excluded from the gross category.
The Teams Championships was held at the City of Newcastle on Saturday 14th June. Our team of James Curry(146), Andrew Scrimshaw (149) and Danny Shevill (152) finished 4th with a total of 447. The winners were City of Newcastle with a total of 430.
Our junior team of Joel Armstrong, Jack Hill, Andrew Scrimshaw and Dan Atkinson finished 2nd in the NJGL Team Championship held at Stocksfield on Sunday 15th June. The winners were Goswick.
In the County Championship held at Hexham during June 7 of our members took part. David Craig (145), Andrew Scrimshaw (148) and James Curry (148) all qualified for the match-play stage while Danny Shevill (152), Kevin Robson (154), Denny Ward (156) and Luke Anderson (RH) failed to qualify. In the last 16 matches James defeated S Heads, B Taylor and C Paisley to reach the final, unfortunatley he lost to M Penny 4&3 in the final. Andrew lost to P Waugh and David lost to M Penny.
In the Davidson Cup we have defeated Dunstanburgh 3.5 to 1.5, Goswick 3.5 to 1.5 and Matfen Hall 5 - 0. The semi final draw will be made shortly.
